A week ago, our nation was severely tested as a deadly uprising fueled by self-important politicians and partisan disinformation designed to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election.
Those images made it clear to everyone that our political division and stalemate no longer simply undermine the functioning of our government; they now threaten the continuity of our democratic republic.
This is a time not only for unequivocal words, but also for bold action: we must hold accountable the leaders who have betrayed the public's trust, and we must speed up the impartial feeds unrest.
In 2020, Unite America supported a cross-party list of candidates committed to putting the country above the party and advocating reforms to improve our political system. We are proud that most of these leaders, Democrats and Republicans alike, voted in the last election to uphold the will of the people. In particular, we extend a big thank you to Rep. Peter Meijer, a Republican from Michigan, who has been pronounced regarding the integrity of our elections and the need for fairness of our political leaders.
"It didn't have to end like this, with five people deadincluding a Capitol Police officer. This should be a moment of settlement for the country as a whole, and the conservative movement in particular, ”said Meijer (photo). "If the Republican Party ever hopes to regain the public's confidence and lead the country forward after this horrific attack, it must first be honest with itself."
We agree. We also believe that account should be given to all 147 members of Congress who voted to object to the Electoral College's certification of results – putting party over land – just hours after the Capitol was violated by a violent crowd. Generations of Americans have risked their lives to protect that building and what it stands for, but these members refused to even risk their jobs to uphold their oath of office to protect and defend our constitution.
Accordingly, in this unprecedented circumstance, Unite America has withdrawn our approval from California Republican Representative Jay Obernolte and requested reimbursement of a PAC contribution to Ohio Congressman Bill Johnson. They made a terrible calculation and their decisions have major consequences for our country.
The key to improving our politics is not just change Who we choose, but how we choose. As long as our leaders' path to election runs through the extreme bases of both political parties, and as long as both political parties are shielded from any form of new competition, our country will continue to be torn apart and our democracy will continue to fight. .
The events of January 6, 2021 should prompt a clear call to Congress and the state legislature for partisan gerrymandering, closed primaries, multiple winner elections and voter participation barriers that collectively deprive citizens, disrupt representation and feed our divisions, to eliminate.
Fortunately, electoral reform is starting to take root across the country. Alaska voters, for example, passed a reform last November backed by Unite America to implement our country's first non-partisan primaries with a rank-choice ballot general election, which will have the impact of rewarding rather punitive leaders that put the public interest above partial interests. . Notably Lisa Murkowski from Alaska was the first Republican senator who last week called for the president's resignation. Reform is important because incentives matter.
Unite America is redoubling our efforts to enact independent electoral reforms that repair the broken stimulus structure in our political system. And we will hold ourselves and those we support to the highest standards of integrity as we work to put voters first.
